Mechanotransduction part 1: Understanding

Abstract

Mechanotransduction plays an important role in craniofacial development by converting mechanical stimuli into biochemical signals that influence bone growth and remodeling. This review critically examines the impact of mechanical loading on the development and maintenance of bones from childhood through adulthood.

The evidence suggests that mechanical forces not only drive craniofacial growth during developmental stages but also contribute to bone remodeling and structural adaptations in adulthood due to changes in DNA expression. Understanding these mechanisms offers valuable insights for clinical practice, emphasizing the potential of incorporating mechanical stimuli into therapeutic interventions for craniofacial disorders.
